Your Love Broke Through

I first heard Keith Greens music over 30 years ago…As a young Christian his music spoke to my heart about the things that were important. Loving God with all your heart, having a burden for those who were lost, caring about what Jesus cares about. And all these years later it still does. Keith left us too soon, killed in a tragic plane crash along with two of his children, three-year old son Josiah, and a two-year old daughter, Bethany. But the message of his music lives on.

My wife bought me a Keith Green CD for an Easter gift, and as I listened to the songs it brought me to tears, and once again I was challenged to remember the things that are important. The words below are from one of my favorite Keith Green songs and they are especially poignant as I think of all of those who brought friends and loved ones to church on Easter Sunday. For some it was a day of celebration, their prayers answered, when their friends or family members, experienced His love for the very first time. For some that day is still to come. And the waiting can be heartbreaking.

But don’t give up.

The Lord is faithful to His promises and He has heard your prayers. And one day, on the day He has appointed, His love will break through for them just as it did for me and for you…

“Like a foolish dreamer trying to build a highway to the sky
All my hopes would come tumbling down
And I never knew just why
Until today, when you pulled away the clouds

That hung like curtains on my eyes
Well I’ve been blind all these wasted years
And I thought I was so wise
But then you took me by surprise

Like waking up from the longest dream, how real it seemed
Until your love broke through
I’ve been lost in a fantasy, that blinded me
Until your love broke through

All my life I’ve been searching for that crazy missing part
And with one touch, you just rolled away
The stone that held my heart
And now I see that the answer was as easy

As just asking you in
And I am so sure I could never doubt
Your gentle touch again
It’s like the power of the wind

Like waking up from the longest dream, how real it seemed
Until your love broke through
I’ve been lost in a fantasy, that blinded me
Until your love, your love broke through

Like waking up from the longest dream, how real it seemed
Until your love broke through
Until your love broke through

“Now at last they were beginning chapter One of the great story no one on earth has read: which goes on forever”. I love this line at the end of the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Everyone has a story to tell and ultimately we are all part of a greater story that someday will be revealed in full. “ For now, we can only see a dim and blurry picture of things”. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). My story is not remarkable, although the events I have had the privilege in my life to witness have been. I grew up in the south “the land of cotton” and the old times there were definitely not forgotten. I remember where I was and what I was doing when JFK and Martin Luther King were murdered in Dallas and in Memphis. I remember the Civil Rights movement, a time of great unrest and change. I remember the dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” in the late 1960’s. It was also the dawning of my love for playing music, a love that has stayed with me throughout my life. If my life were chapters in a book one would tell of my precious bride of 20+ years who endured so much and stood beside me through the good and the bad. One would describe the blessings of being a father and a grandfather. One would tell about how despite being “the wretch” the song sings about God was able to change me, and use me to make a difference in others lives, make me a servant in His church, and surround me with friends all because of His goodness. All part of a story that has had many twists and turns. I think of the words Jimmy Buffet wrote in one of my favorite songs "As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man I have chalked up many a mile Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles" And so it is true for me. But in all of my travels and all I have read and experienced nothing compares to where I am headed. The place where my story here ends and the story that goes on forever begins! "" I am confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day He returns". Philippians 1:6 My hope is that as we all run our race that in some small way my words will encourage and speak to you, as your story is being written. And draw you ever closer to the One who loves you. Further up and further in!

  3. I have all his albums and memorized all his songs. I went to one of his concerts in which he played along with 2nd Chapter of Acts and Phil Keaggy. It was the most memorable concert I ever went to. I read his book about his life that stirred my spiritual life like no other. He had a way of changing people’s hearts through his God-given music. My husband went to Texas where he had a ranch with his wife and served there for about a month. It changed his life as well. When you hear his music, you hear a story. When you listen even more closely, you hear a word from God speaking to your heart. To say that man spoke volumes to my heart and life is an understatement. Thanks for taking me back in time to remember those precious anointed days.

    • Thank you Stacy. I had planned a different post, but decided to do this one instead. Glad you enjoyed it.

    • What an awesome memory to have served with his ministry. I believe Keith was truly a prophet for his time. The test of that is the testimony and the fruit of his influence. You and your husband, myself and many others speak of how Keith’s music and ministry drew them closer to God, and strengthened their walk. It is amazing that it still speaks and draws us to God so many years later.

Thanks for sharing. I was /am an ardent fan of Keith Green too. His songs were anointed and powerful to the glory of God.

    • Thank you Evelyn. I had not heard his music in a long time. When I did recently I immediately felt the anointing of the Holy Spirit and that feeling of being in the Lords presence and with an old friend at the same time. It is always good to hear from you. I pray my contributions to your blog are pleasing to the Lord and bring glory to him. Like Keith I realize without God’s help I have little to offer.

Cliff, The Lord looks for our availability even though we may think we are nothing. His solution is He is everything we need to represent Him to the world. Glory and praise belongs to Him. Blessings to you and family as you love Him.
