Can We Worship God And Serve Something Else?

golden dalfCan we worship God and serve something or someone else?

We can go to church and sing and pray and worship God. Then we may walk out of church and serve another god.

The God might be work or kids or food, or our house or money. It might even be our service to God (think about it). It might be the receptionist at work, or our hobby.

Today I’m asking myself if I might be worshiping God and serving this blog I write each week.

What or whom the other god is, can we separate our worship from our service? And if we’re honest, and we admit we are serving another god, does that make our God worship hollow? Meaningless? I don’t know.

Tough questions I’m wrestling with this week.

Jesus said,

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and :money. Matthew 6:24

About Steve Sawyer

God blessed me with the gift of writing. Mom told me I wrote paragraphs in second grade when others were learning to write sentences. I spent more than three decades in professional writing gigs. For the past eight years I've combined my passion for writing with my love for the Lord. He and I write a Christ-centered, family-friendly blog to glorify God Monday-thru Friday at My wife and I have four grown children and two precious granddaughters we co-parent with their mom. I'm a Galatians 2:20 disciple of Christ seeking to allow Christ to live His life in me, through me, and as me.

Steve, this is a very good subject for discussion especially in these activity filled days with many distractions away from God. There is a very good discourse on Christian worship here

Yes, I could worship God in motion without my sincere heart and be a hypocrite. He will know because I cannot hide from Him – He looks on the heart and not on the outward appearance.

For me, I would hesitate to worship with sin in my heart without confession, just as I abstain from Holy Communion if I am not right before Him.

I would not indulge in an act of worship if the God I worship will not accept it. It will be a waste of my effort and time and mocking Him.

Our God and Lord says I must not serve any other god but Him. That means He will not accept my worship to Him if He is but one of the gods I worship. I must meet His ( my God’s) condition to be accepted
The efficacy of my worship must/will depend on whether I “toe” his line of acceptance.
