Bible Lesson from a Fourth Grader

You never know how God’s going to teach us His word.

I learned a lesson about the Bible from a fourth grader Sunday.  I teach 3rd, 4th and 5thkids graders at church. Sunday morning we were studying the rich young ruler, the guy who came running up to Jesus wanting Jesus to tell him how to gain eternal life.

“You know the commandments,” Jesus said, “Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal . . .” The rich young ruler replied, ““Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.” (Jesus must have chuckled under his breath.)

“There it is,” my wise little friend said. “He lied. He broke a commandment”. She went on to remind me no one  has ever, or will ever keep the commandments except Jesus Christ.

No way could that ruler keep all the commandments. I never caught the irony in this story until this little cherub pointed it out to me. He lied about keeping the commandments, which means he didn’t keep the commandments.

I told my class I’d never seen that truth in the rich young ruler story till I heard it from my astute little fourth grader.

The experience taught me God can teach us any way He chooses, from a learned Bible scholar, or the Bible knowledge of a fourth grader.

About Steve Sawyer

God blessed me with the gift of writing. Mom told me I wrote paragraphs in second grade when others were learning to write sentences. I spent more than three decades in professional writing gigs. For the past eight years I've combined my passion for writing with my love for the Lord. He and I write a Christ-centered, family-friendly blog to glorify God Monday-thru Friday at My wife and I have four grown children and two precious granddaughters we co-parent with their mom. I'm a Galatians 2:20 disciple of Christ seeking to allow Christ to live His life in me, through me, and as me.

“Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?” Matthew 21:16
