I am sitting in the office where my almost 17 year-old daughter is taking her driver’s written test. Her first time, she failed. Before even getting to the place to take the test, her anxiety was through the roof. Hence, the failure of her first test.
Second round she failed again, only by two missed answers. Talk about disappointment. Her anxiety was down a bit but she felt so bad the first time, she was scared to go through it again. Each time she failed, she got a celebration ice cream afterwards. Why? Because we wanted her to know how proud we were for studying and preparing herself for this test despite the results.
And here we are again, the third time. Praying that she will pass with flying colors. AND, we celebrated ahead of time by getting ice cream before the trip.
God tells us to not be anxious for anything.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7
Well, if you ask me that is a pretty tall request. However, God also said that He would be there for us at all times, not forsaking or leaving us. As a teen, anxiety is huge with all the pressures of today in this world.
Now God didn’t say, “Adults, be anxious for nothing,” and leaving the rest of society out. No, he meant that word for all of us. Today as a teen, it almost seems impossible to lead a non-anxious life. School tests, parent demands and accountabilities, future endeavors, peer pressure, etc… How in the world can a teen get by and be numb to anxiety?
Here’s the good news about being anxious. Every time you conquer or have victory over an anxious thought or anxious situation, you are growing and learning about how to be anxious for nothing. That’s right. You become stronger, courageous, and more faithful until you get to the point in which anxiety plays a smaller role in your life and God becomes a bigger.
You see, God is more powerful than any anxiety thrown your way. You only have to do one thing. Ask God for help. Saying Jesus’ name is not only powerful, but it can help you break free of anything that is binding you up, destroy walls that prevent you from moving forward, and break any chains holding you down. How awesome is that?
So the next event that comes up and makes you really anxious, remember the God you serve – The author and finisher of your life. He knows you better than anyone else and also knows how to help you when you start to get those pangs of anxiety.
As to my daughter…. She passed the test and will be driving very soon. Oh no! 🚗 😀
