What does the Bible say about Fortune telling, witches, séances, and horoscopes? Let’s find out!
Last week I talked about the history of a popular holiday around the world – Halloween. Today I would like to touch further on the subject by focusing on fortune telling, witches, séances and horoscopes.
The reasons why you as a teen need to understand these topics is two-fold.
1. To be better equipped spiritually and scripturally to come against these forms of evil worship.
2. To protect yourself from falling into these traps as a Christian by following or intermixing with your faith.
When I was a kid, my neighbor had a game. In this game, you asked the game some questions while you placed your hands on the one board piece in the center of the game. After giving your question, the board piece would move to different letters to give the answer. Since it was just me and my brother who were playing, I knew I could trust him when he told the truth.
In the series of moves, that board piece moved back and forth when neither I nor my brother pushed it. I screamed at my brother thinking he was doing all the pushing. I could tell on his face that in fact, he wasn’t pushing it and thought it was me. We realized then that something or someone was pushing it. That is when reality hit us like a ton of bricks that something very spiritually dark was in that game.
I hesitated to tell my mother what happened but glad I eventually did. She began to tell me that what we experienced was real. However, that was not the scary part. The scary part is when my mother began to tell me how a game like this opens the doors to satanic activity in our lives and can cause a lot of chaos through demonic activity. I had no idea that a little game could be so evil.
These types of games as well as ghost hunting and séances all conjure up the dead and sadly, the movie industry and media make light of it or make money off of it. The fact is, these are dark supernatural demonic forces that are not funny or joyful.
Many infamous singers and actors (such as Ariana Grande) have participated in graveyard visits and entertaining the supernatural only to realize that they have a difficult time being released of the aftermath that occurs – such as nightmares, seeing dead people, hearing noises, feeling fearful or followed.
By adding a very much celebrated holiday of Halloween which glorifies witches and spells, more evil is intertwined with fun; deceiving children, teens and adults. Witches are also still around today and are represented in many forms. No, they don’t ride brooms like in the movies. But they have come up with more deceiving ways to encourage other religions (including Christianity) that you can be a witch and a faith follower.
Witches also use spells, talk to the dead, and believe in gods and goddesses to heal them of their ailments whether it is physical, mental or spiritual. They use their spells, beliefs, as well as use fear as their excuse to bring about balance in people’s lives. That is a false lie.
“Do not allow a sorceress (form of witch) to live.
Fortune telling is another avenue of the supernatural that God tells us to stay away from. Although fortune telling is more related to certain cultures of today, there are however many outside of those cultures who also follow in fortune telling. Is it real? Yes and no. There are many who fake it and use it to make money off of hurting people. There are others however, who do have a spirit of discernment and knowledge and use it for their own gain and evil. These people could honor God and ask Him to use this spirit for His good (such as the prophets in the Bible), but instead, it is being used for evil and to gain trust and faith into something outside of God. Unless you turn it over to God it will always be seen as evil before the Lord.
As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination (to foresee the future) and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. Acts 16:16-19
This young girl’s family was angry. They lost their income through this young slave girl. Paul and Silas also recognized that it was a spirit within this young girl that was allowing her to do fortune-telling and divination. Even this spirit recognized the Most High God.
Another topic that you find mostly in the movies but is very real of today is séances (a meeting at which people attempt to make contact with the dead, especially through the agency of a medium). It is very clear in the Bible of how God feels about the living reaching out to the dead. You may also be surprised that in the verse below that speaks about human sacrifices. These types of ceremonies were not just during the Biblical times, but also continue today. Although it is mainly happening in the nation of Africa, there are other parts of the world where this abomination still goes on.
The IHEU organization had this to say – Ritual killing and related human rights abuses take place on the continent because many people still believe that the use of charms and the performance of ritual sacrifice can fortify them spiritually, enhance their fortunes in business and during elections, or protect them from harm, disease, poverty, accident, death or destruction.
“When you come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominable practices of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, anyone who practices divination or tells fortunes or interprets omens, or a sorcerer or a charmer or a medium or a necromancer (one who speaks to the dead) or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord. And because of these abominations the Lord your God is driving them out before you. Deuteronomy 18:9-12
In the Bible, it talks about the sin of divination (the practice of seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown by supernatural means). Reading and interpreting horoscopes (signs after the stars) is another popular thing of today. People and teens alike, like to find out how their day will be, who will be their next love, if they will find fortune or if someone will betray them.
…For you have trusted in your wickedness… Therefore evil shall come upon you… trouble shall fall upon you… Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, And the monthly prognosticators stand up and save you from what shall come upon you. Behold, they shall be as stubble, The fire shall burn them; They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame…
God has clearly said over and over throughout the scripture that it is evil and detestable to Him. Why? Because these things glorify evil and evil glorifies satan. God wants us to be consecrated (made Holy) and separated from the kingdom of darkness. Evil leads to death. God leads to life.
So the next time you see or hear any of these things, come against it with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit. Stay far away from it and stay close to God. Ask God to open your eyes to see truth and give you wisdom in all things. For ONLY GOD foresees the future because He made the future. Trust in Him and Him ONLY!
“put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:11-12).
