Are Demons Real and Can They Harm You - ptl2010

So what is a demon?

They are fallen angels who once served our Great and Almighty God, but chose to follow after Lucifer (Satan – the Chief Demon who was once called Star of the Morning) before he was removed from heaven and sent to earth.

God speaking to Satan –
“How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! “
But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’
“Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol (hell), To the recesses of the pit. Isaiah 14:12-15

Angels have free will just like us. They can choose who they want to follow. Satan chose pride in the end.

Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings. Ezekiel 28:17

The great dragon was hurled down–that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.  Revelation 12:9

Can these demons harm you?

They can tempt you, accuse you, torment you, cause affliction and deceive you. However, as Christians under the authority and power of Christ, we can come against satan and his demons by just saying the name Jesus, praying in the Holy Spirit as well as reading and using God’s Word to protect us and to destroy the enemy.

No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds. 2 Corinthians 11:13

Satan will even use the scriptures that he knows so well, to deceive you in your faith, twisting the Word for his benefit. His demons also can do the same. Their job is to try to cast doubt on your faith, to discourage you, to twist God’s Word in your mind and to cause confusion about your walk with God.

In the book of Job in the Old Testament, God was so sure of Job’s faithfulness to Him that He allowed satan to test him and do whatever he wanted to Job, knowing full well that Job would stay committed to God. Satan didn’t waste time. He afflicted painful boils onto Job. Satan wanted to make Job so miserable that Job would curse and leave God. But we all know that Job continued to be steadfast in following God.

For some of you, afflictions, pain, hurt, and more that satan has thrown at you, have felt like God left you. The good news is that God already gave us victory over satan and his demons who try to hurt us. That is why we use the Word of God which is the Sword of the Spirit to cut down and keep away anything that is hurled at you. Using the armor of God in Ephesians 6:11-17 is a powerful weapon formed against the enemy when they strike. You are not left powerless.

11 Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemes and the strategies and the deceits of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) places. 13 Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resist and stand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious]. 14 So stand firm and hold your ground, having [a]tightened the wide band of truth (personal integrity, moral courage) around your waist and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (an upright heart), 15 and having [b]strapped on your feet the gospel of peace in preparation [to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news]. 16 Above all, lift up the [protective] [c]shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.  (Bible Gateway)

Demons look for the weak, the hurting, the innocent. Demons know what things to say to discourage you, to make you feel worthless and unloved. That is their job. All you have to do is to come against it in all of God’s authority and stop those insults in their tracks. As a Christian, you have more power than the demons as well as satan because you are covered by the Blood of Jesus that destroyed evil through the cross.

Just as angels are real spirit creatures, so are demons but in evil form. They can become as a likeness of anyone if they choose. They can also talk – “Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.” Luke 4:41 They can send spiritual and evil influences such as nightmares, thoughts, and other people.

There was a young girl, age 15, who had nightmares constantly. She was afraid to go to sleep at night because the dreams were so realistic. They were dreams of demons chasing her, breathing fire and trying to find her and wanting to destroy her. She was going through a difficult time in her life and although she loved and was devoted to God, she couldn’t understand why this was happening to her.

Eventually after speaking with several spiritual leaders, it was agreed that she was being attacked by the spirit of torment. After much prayer, saying the Name of Jesus over and over and reading the scriptures, she was able to see the spirit of torment fade away. She learned how to confront it and now has the discernment when it starts to show its ugly head. Eventually it will completely go away as she continues to pray.

Remember, you have the ultimate victory against any enemy or demon because you were bought with a price – the blood of Jesus on the cross which cancels out anything that satan or his demons try to hold against you. Through Christ, YOU have the victory!
