Whoever becomes president they are not the answer to our greatest problems as a nation
With the presidential election still almost eight months away there is much confusion, anger and division surrounding it. Without a doubt this is a pivotal moment in the history of our nation. But there is much more a stake than who will lead our nation be it democrat or republican, for the next four years. In reality whoever is elected even though they will have influence in them, provide the answers or solutions to the greatest needs of our country. As it has been so many times in our history and the history of the world our greatest need is overlooked.
In chapter one of Nehemiah we see Nehemiah’s response when he hears the news that his beloved city Jerusalem “Is a disaster. The survivors in exile have been wronged and are hated. The wall of Jerusalem has been reduced to piles of rock, and its gates consumed by flame.”
Nehemiah after hearing the news does not form a committee, organize an army or rush to the government for help and relief.
In fact Nehemiah is so overwhelmed with grief he can only sit and weep…..
The grief is overwhelming and it drives Nehemiah to seek the audience of the True God of heaven, the One who sets up nations and brings them down.
His prayers are forthright and honest.
He first asks God to notice him, to hear his prayers.
He praises God and reminds Him of His promises.
He asks for God’s attention to the situation before him and addresses the sins that has brought exile and hardship to God’s people.
He confesses the sins of a nation,
“I confess our wickedness, we have acted extremely wickedly toward You, we have rejected Your commands.”
Finally he reminds God that despite their unfaithfulness, God has promised that if they returned to Him
“I will gather you and bring you to the place of My choosing, where My very name dwells.”
Our nation is in great distress, we to are guilty of great wickedness. We have rejected what is right and good for the sake of pleasure and our own desires. And the solutions will not be found in the political process.
It does not matter what president or government we have. God can exercise His will through whoever He chooses. Nehemiah’s assistance came from a pagan king.
What does matter is that we pray. Pray for our leaders, pray for our people, pray that God who is sovereign, would intervene in our affairs.
