What We Believe

What We Believe

As a man believes in his heart so is he. Proverbs 23:7

Do you ever think about what you really believe?
What is true, what is real?
What is not?
Our ideas about truth, our perception of what we believe to be true, influences our lives in many ways.
It affects our choice of who we decide to share our life with, who our friends will be, where we go to church or if we do not,how we view others, where we will live, the car we drive, the house we buy, the food we eat, how we live life.

But there are truths demanding our attention that go far beyond these every day matters of life.
What we believe these truths to be, and how we incorporate them into our lives have critical value not just in our time here on earth, but also into eternity.

What do we believe about God?
Is there a man upstairs? And if there is what is he like? Is he interested in us? Does he have a plan or are we on our own? Do we live and die and that’s it…

What do we believe about Jesus?
Son of God, prophet or just a good man who said a lot of really wise things.
Did he really come to save us or is John 3:16 just a slogan we see on a sign at a football game?

What do we believe about the end of the world?
Antichrist, 666, Revelations,is there a finite length to its existence? Will it end by a Zombie apocalypse, or some other type of apocalyptic event? And if and when it does what then?

What do we believe the source of the conflict is that we see in our world? War, poverty, hatred, injustice that rages in so many places in so many ways. Are we aware of an entity, a being that is behind the pain, suffering and injustice we see? (Spoiler alert it is not zombies, vampires, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump).

What do we believe in heaven and hell?
And the list goes on and on.

Several years ago I felt the need to write down the things I believe. The things that I believe are without a doubt 100% true.
At the top of the list
“I believe good always wins in the end”
Why do I believe this?
A.W. Tozer wrote “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us”.
When I think about God I am convinced God is good.
Psalms 119:68 reads
“You (God) are good and what you do is good”
And because He is God and good, good will win in the end.
And everything else I believe the important truths rest on this foundation.

God is good and does good.

I believe:
He wants us to trust regardless of what we see that would tell us otherwise, that He is in control. That He does care for you and for me. and that is good.

He wants us to know that Jesus was born in a stable in Bethlehem to accept the weight and penalty of our sins, and die in our place for them. And after rising on the third day He destroyed the power of sin and death. Really, really good!

He wants us to know that the end of the world and life as we know it will come at a time He has already decided. And while that will not be a good day for those who choose to ignore Him, it will be the beginning for all who love Him. That is very, very good.

He wants us to know that despite all the evil we see in our world a day is coming when everything will be set right.
There is no war, between good and evil, the war has been won.
What we see is a rebellion against the Victor and that will be dealt with in due time.

He wants us to know there is heaven, and sadly though never intended for those created in His image, there is a hell.
He wants us to know He has done everything necessary short of tampering with our will, to prevent anyone from winding up there.
And even to this day September 4th 2016 He is withholding His wrath that all might have a chance to be saved.

Because God is good and does good, wants good for all.
We can trust in His goodness intended for a world that is desperately in need of the good He offers.
If I could challenge you to do one thing today it would be this.
Ask yourself what you think about God.
Is He good or do you think of Him as something else?
How you answer that question changes everything.
But He is good and He does good. And He wants good for you!

About HCliffCraig.com

“Now at last they were beginning chapter One of the great story no one on earth has read: which goes on forever”. I love this line at the end of the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Everyone has a story to tell and ultimately we are all part of a greater story that someday will be revealed in full. “ For now, we can only see a dim and blurry picture of things”. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). My story is not remarkable, although the events I have had the privilege in my life to witness have been. I grew up in the south “the land of cotton” and the old times there were definitely not forgotten. I remember where I was and what I was doing when JFK and Martin Luther King were murdered in Dallas and in Memphis. I remember the Civil Rights movement, a time of great unrest and change. I remember the dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” in the late 1960’s. It was also the dawning of my love for playing music, a love that has stayed with me throughout my life. If my life were chapters in a book one would tell of my precious bride of 20+ years who endured so much and stood beside me through the good and the bad. One would describe the blessings of being a father and a grandfather. One would tell about how despite being “the wretch” the song sings about God was able to change me, and use me to make a difference in others lives, make me a servant in His church, and surround me with friends all because of His goodness. All part of a story that has had many twists and turns. I think of the words Jimmy Buffet wrote in one of my favorite songs "As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man I have chalked up many a mile Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles" And so it is true for me. But in all of my travels and all I have read and experienced nothing compares to where I am headed. The place where my story here ends and the story that goes on forever begins! "" I am confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day He returns". Philippians 1:6 My hope is that as we all run our race that in some small way my words will encourage and speak to you, as your story is being written. And draw you ever closer to the One who loves you. Further up and further in!
