Wonderful Counselor

Have you ever had trouble with some piece of mechanical equipment? I mean, the kind of problem when no matter what you try it just won’t function as it supposed to? That was the scenario at our house a few weeks ago when our home printer malfunctioned. And since a homeschooling family relies heavily on a printer to prepare worksheets, administer tests and copy lessons from our textbooks, a cranky printer presents something of a crisis.

That was until I asked for help from someone who knows way more about computer issues than I do, my son, Ryan. After taking a look at it and diagnosing the issue, he explained the problem, counseled me on the solution, and much to my delight, got it back in perfect working order in a relatively short period of time.

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor…
Isaiah 9:6

What is a counselor except … someone who is available to give you a point of view that you don’t have … to render help that you need … and to provide a remedy to a problem that you don’t understand?

Isn’t that exactly what Jesus offers to do for us?  Only most of the time our problem isn’t as simple as a broken printer… it’s that we all contend with broken lives.

As Isaiah 61 helps us understand, the mission of Jesus Christ goes far beyond just securing a place for us in heaven. Verse 3 says He was sent “to bestow on them a crown of beauty, instead of ashes; the oil of gladness, instead of mourning; and a garment of praise, instead of a spirit of despair.”

 Rescue. Redemption. Restoration.

christmasThat’s His plan for everyone! And no situation is too hopeless for God to step into bringing with His transforming grace with Him! If you don’t know Him at all, He is able and willing to rescue you from the darkness that you may not even realize surrounds you… and if you are a believer, your rescue is an operation in progress. He is constantly working to deliver you from the futility of living for yourself and longs to restore you fully to Himself.

So as you head into this year’s Christmas celebration with its unique challenges and family situations, you’ll likely be confronted with conundrums far more perplexing than putting together a bike, assembling a trampoline or fixing a broken printer! And when you do, let me encourage you to invite Jesus to be your Wonderful Counselor, remembering that there’s nothing He can’t rescue, redeem and restore!
