4 Reasons Why You Were Made

The other day I was sorting through some of our official documents and filing them away for safe keeping and I came across my kids’ birth certificates. I only intended to pause long enough to jog a few memories, but as I reviewed them, it occurred to me that there was one glaring omission on the documents! And not just on ours, but on all birth documents.

All of them tell:

birth-certificate-WHO was born (and to whom)

-WHAT the vital statistics are

-WHERE the birth occurred

-WHEN the baby arrived

But nowhere does the document say WHY the child was born. That’s because no government, doctor, or parent can accurately answer that question. Fortunately, there is a trustworthy document, the Holy Bible, that gives us a reliable answer to the question of why we were created. In context of God’s truth, we find meaning and purpose for our existence that reaches far beyond personal pleasure-seeking.

Here are 4 lofty purposes that the Lord has for your life

You are made for God – You can never hope to know the full scope of why you were created apart from believing in and knowing God. Genesis 1 gives us the details of His deliberate and definite decision to fashion for Himself a people “in His image” to whom and with whom He could personally relate.  Paul reminds us of why we were created again in Colossians 1:16 when he tells us that through Jesus, “All things have been created by Him and for Him”, and that includes you! The scriptures give the assurance that you have been made by Christ, and for Christ!

You are made to know the truth – First Timothy 2:3-4 gives us a foundational starting point that identifies why we are created. God wants us to “be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.” It begins with becoming rightly related to the Father through His Son. That one time event is crucial to understanding your purpose on earth, but it doesn’t stop there. He created you to continue seeking Him and coming to an understanding of His purpose in and for the world, His work in the church, and His individual will for you .

You are made to be like Jesus – Romans 8:29 says, “For those God foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son…” That word “conformed” means “to become similar in form, nature or character.” Since we are already made in God’s image, He intends for us to begin to think the way He thinks, prioritize according to His priorities, and make His desires, our desires.

You are made to share God’s truth – If you are still wondering why you were made, look no further than 2 Corinthians 5:18-20.  Paul says “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” All that just means, that no matter what school you go to, or what job you have, or what your station in life, God created you for the purpose of helping others get to know Jesus.  It could be as formal as becoming a teacher trained, practiced, and skilled in sharing the Gospel, or as casual as encouraging godly faithfulness to a friend over coffee.

So, if you ever wondered what you were born to do… just remember that you’ve been commissioned to be an ambassador of reconciliation… God intends to make His appeal to the world through you! (vs 20) That’s your job. And properly understood, telling other people about what Christ has done becomes an overflow of a truly changed heart which He receives as pleasing worship offered with gratitude and love.
