The Last Week

Good or Best

In less than a week we will celebrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus our Lord.
As I think about that final week of His life, the cross fast approaching, I wonder what it would have been like to  walk with Him during this final week on earth?
Had I walked with Him along with the disciples for three short years, witnessing the miracles, the compassion, the calming of storms, the loaves and fishes, would it have been hard for me to grasp along with Peter, John and the rest “it is better for you that I go”? Would I have questioned what He was about to do? “Come on Jesus could it really get any better than this? Why would you change what you have going on? No Lord this will never happen to you….”
Would I have joined Peter and the others unable to grasp the plan that was unfolding? I think I would because even knowing what I know now, sometimes good seems like good enough and it is hard to consider what might be best.
Why? Our vision of best like the disciples is limited, we have little experience of what best looks like.
No question Jesus healing the sick, casting out demons, miracle after miracle, prompting John to write “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” was good, very good.
But Jesus did not come for good, He came for best.
During His three years of earthly ministry, as He rode into Jerusalem, shared the final meal with his disciples, His purpose and mission was clear and never far from His thoughts.
” Then Jesus began to tell the disciples about what would happen to Him. He said He would have to go to Jerusalem. There the elders, chief priests, and scribes would meet Him; He would suffer at their hands; and He would be killed. But three days later, He would be raised to new life.” – Matthew 16:21
But the story does not end there. The best was yet to come. New life. Jesus first, many to follow. His resurrection, victory over death and grave changed everything.
For the woman at the well, for the woman caught in sin, for the leper, the demon possessed, for all the sick and oppressed that would come after, for you and for me, Jesus made good on this promise

I have come that you might have life, more and better than you could imagine.

John 10:10
Right here, right now!
Father God, as we celebrate Easter help us to remember the cross, to honor and celebrate the victory that was won through Your Son’s shed blood.
Help us to recognize the power of the resurrection that calls us to new life here and now, new life that will continue on into eternity. Help us not to settle only for good, temporary relief from the troubles of this world, Help us to seek out your best, not missing anything You desire for us. No matter what the cost.
Resurrection power that moves us further on and further in, to Your will and purpose, sons and daughters of the Most High.
In Jesus name, Amen

About messagefromthefield

“Now at last they were beginning chapter One of the great story no one on earth has read: which goes on forever”. I love this line at the end of the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. I believe everyone has a story to tell and more than we know, we are all part of a greater story that someday will be revealed in full. “ For now, we can only see a dim and blurry picture of things”. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). My story is not remarkable, although the events I have had the privilege in my life to witness have been. I grew up in the south “the land of cotton” and the old times there were definitely not forgotten. I remember where I was and what I was doing when JFK and Martin Luther King were murdered in Dallas and in Memphis. I remember the Civil Rights movement a time of great unrest and change. The dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” in the late 1960’s was also the dawning of my love for playing music, a love that would lead me as Bilbo Bagging in the Hobbit wrote “there and back again” ( ironically the Hobbit was published on September 21st 1937 the same day as my birthday although not the same year). On that October day in 1978 when I was miraculously and wonderfully saved it would naturally follow that I would take that love of music and use it to serve the One who created music. But that is a story for another time. If my life were chapters in a book one would tell of my precious bride of 20+ years who endured so much and stood beside me through the good and the bad. One would describe the blessings of being a father and a grandfather. One would tell about how despite being “the wretch” the song sings about God was able to change me, and use me to make a difference in others lives, make me a servant in His church, and surround me with friends all because of His goodness. All part of a story that has had many twists and turns. I think of the words Jimmy Buffet wrote in one of my favorite songs "As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man I have chalked up many a mile Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles" And so it is true for me. But in all of my travels and all I have read and experienced nothing compares to where I am headed. The place where my story ends and the story that goes on forever begins! I love these words that will keep me going through good days and bad, ever headed to that place where the Spirit and the Bride even today says "Come". And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.... and the promise for all who follow Him " I am confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day He returns". Philippians 1:6 My hope is that as we all run our race that in some small way my words will encourage and speak to you, as your story is being written. And draw you ever closer to the One who loves you. Further up and further in!
