I couldn’t believe this happened again..

Comment by Christina Ellegood whose sister Nicole Hadley was killed in a school shooting in Paducah Kentucky in 1997.

As they prepared for another day at school, the students, teachers and the parents of students of Marshall County High School had no idea what was ahead.

At the end of the day two were dead, 18 were wounded by a fellow student.

This has become an all-too-familiar scene in our nation. Office parties, night clubs, concerts, it seems no place or no one is exempt. It hits especially hard when it’s an elementary school, six and seven year olds, young people, high school students. I have a teenager in high school myself.

And probably before the last emergency vehicle left the scene there were calls for more gun control and for our government to take action against “gun violence”. I can understand both sides. I live in a state where it is legal to carry a concealed weapon without a license, which I personally think is foolish, dangerous, and outside the scope of what the founders intended in the Second Amendment.

On the other hand a weapon is a neutral object. Its purpose is dictated by the person who wields it. And in my opinion that is the root of the problem in tragedies like we witnessed yesterday and in the past.

What determines our moral compass helps us determine right and wrong? What would prevent an individual who had access to a handgun or other weapons from going to a school with the intent to kill and harm other students? Or going with that same weapon with the intent to do harm?

For many years by intent and design Judeo-Christian ethics, morals, backed by legal decisions have been removed from the classroom. Beginning with the Supreme Court decision to prohibit officially sponsored prayer in 1962, then one year later prohibiting officially sponsored Bible reading. I’m not trying to be simplistic, but maybe the declaration of “do not kill” from a biblical standpoint, might have bearing on someone’s moral compass. Instead we have you may or may not kill, depending on the situation. Millions of babies are a testament to this humanistic reasoning which has taken over our classrooms.

No the real weapon and yesterday’s tragedy and others is a philosophy. A philosophy that would justify the shooting and harm of innocent people. And as we travel further down the road of a nation without God, we will see more tragedies and worse like the one that occurred yesterday.

I would like to offer the following prayer as a response not only to what we see happening in our schools but in our nation. I pray you will join me.

Lord Jesus we pray for the parents, the teachers, the friend’s, for all who were affected by the tragedy yesterday in Kentucky.  There will be sorrow and hard days ahead for all of them.
Lord Jesus we also pray for a common sense, proactive approach to these threats. We pray for financial resources for schools for building safety upgrades, for whatever protective measures that need to be in place.

We also pray against the schemes of the enemy, that his plans would be discovered, revealed. We understand that first and foremost this is a spiritual battle and we pray against the spirit of anti-christ that has been allowed to remain unhindered in our schools.
We pray for the hearts and minds of these children, we pray against the darkness, deciet and confusion.
We pray that light would shine in darkness, that Your Spirit would embolden and give courage to Your servants You have placed in our schools, administrators, office staff, teachers, lunchroom workers, custodians, teachers, students to share the truth that sets all of us free.
We pray Your kingdom would come, Your will would be done and even in a tragedy like this You would use what the enemy means for evil, for Your glory and Your purposes
Amen

About HCliffCraig.com

“Now at last they were beginning chapter One of the great story no one on earth has read: which goes on forever”. I love this line at the end of the Last Battle by C.S. Lewis. Everyone has a story to tell and ultimately we are all part of a greater story that someday will be revealed in full. “ For now, we can only see a dim and blurry picture of things”. ( 1 Corinthians 13:12). My story is not remarkable, although the events I have had the privilege in my life to witness have been. I grew up in the south “the land of cotton” and the old times there were definitely not forgotten. I remember where I was and what I was doing when JFK and Martin Luther King were murdered in Dallas and in Memphis. I remember the Civil Rights movement, a time of great unrest and change. I remember the dawning of the “Age of Aquarius” in the late 1960’s. It was also the dawning of my love for playing music, a love that has stayed with me throughout my life. If my life were chapters in a book one would tell of my precious bride of 20+ years who endured so much and stood beside me through the good and the bad. One would describe the blessings of being a father and a grandfather. One would tell about how despite being “the wretch” the song sings about God was able to change me, and use me to make a difference in others lives, make me a servant in His church, and surround me with friends all because of His goodness. All part of a story that has had many twists and turns. I think of the words Jimmy Buffet wrote in one of my favorite songs "As a dreamer of dreams and a travelin’ man I have chalked up many a mile Read dozens of books about heroes and crooks And I learned much from both of their styles" And so it is true for me. But in all of my travels and all I have read and experienced nothing compares to where I am headed. The place where my story here ends and the story that goes on forever begins! "" I am confident that He who began a good work in you will carry it on until completion until the day He returns". Philippians 1:6 My hope is that as we all run our race that in some small way my words will encourage and speak to you, as your story is being written. And draw you ever closer to the One who loves you. Further up and further in!

  1. I add my amen to this prayer. You are right if things are to change the change must come first in the mind. Guns are no more dangerous or evil than the cultures that weild them
