Earlier today I was called to say goodbye….to a young man, a bright 21 years old, who passed away tragically, unexpectedly and in the sunrise of his life. I didn’t know him well, I do know members of his family. But like many in my community, we all watched each other’s children grow up through our common family – the love and competition of sports – and in this case, lacrosse, and let me tell you – the family showed up. It was standing room only in the sanctuary as we gathered to hold onto and hold up each other. It was crushing, but also a sweet blessing to see so many people come together to celebrate this young man, his family and his life.
Which leads me to this – I cannot shake the sorrow in my heart. Without addressing the details of the circumstances of this death – I just want to say this to anyone reading this – love each other. Not in word only – but in deed. Parents, I know it is hard to parent – but never ever give up the difficult job. Our kids are living in a world that does not readily offer rudders to steer them – and indeed, if as an adult I am confused by all the pressures and craziness that is hitting in a 24 hour news cycle – how do we expect our children to make sense of it? This has been a hard week in this country. Children at schools being murdered – AGAIN; drugs, especially heroin have taken a grip on the human soul, politics tearing us apart etc…
I want to run up to every young person I know – especially my own sons – and remind them how precious they are, how loved they are, how much goodness can be found inside of them and that they are here – at this moment in life on this planet because God chose them, planned them and planned FOR them in this moment of history.
I want to remind us all not to take light the joy and responsibility we have to each other – we are more than the sum of our accomplishments (or lack thereof), our social stances, our educations, our political issues…. we are each created uniquely, distinctly and as one of a kind. Don’t let pain, evil, confusion or sorrow tear you apart or pull you down. You are loved. You are loved. You are loved… by a creator who crafted you especially to His plans and for the benefits of others. Please, anyone who is reading this – walk away right now and call 10 people in your life and love them sweetly and tenderly… you never know who and how it may change the circumstance they are in at that moment.
God Is LOVE – we are made in His image – then let’s start acting like it.
