ATB 28 Shadow

Growing up I can remember many summer days playing outside.  This was during what today would be considered the dark ages.  Days as a child without say the internet, video games, and on some occasions no television.  Quite often in sharing these stories our children today will look at us like we must have truly be deprived of what life was really all about.

During those days it seemed that no matter what the weather, we were outside.  Blazing heat, or rain, we were outside. Looking back I can recall so many different things.  Those memories grow more precious it would seem with each passing day.

One memory in particular that continues to resonate with me is that of playing outside during that time of the day when as you were walking you would glance up and see your shadow.  As a child I always found myself trying to figure out how to outrun my shadow.  And of course as time went by, it dawned on me that no matter where I went, my shadow was with me.  A shadow that was with me and stayed with me no matter what or where I would go.

To fast forward to these days of my life, I find myself thinking about shadows once again.  To this end I am drawn to the words of Psalms 17:8 which ask to keep me as the apple of your eye, hide me in the shadow of your wings.

Each and every day, from the moment that I wake up until the very minute that I go to sleep it is my prayer to remain as the apple of God’s eye.  And just as important, I want to know that I am hidden under the shadow of his wings. For we know that as we dwell in the shelter of the Most High we will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

Just as I was a child, to my utter amazement I find now that no matter where I go, the shadow of God is with me.  Through the good times as well as the bad times his shadow is there.  For through it all, he has been our help, and thus in the shadow of his wings I will sing for joy.  How precious is his lovingkindness, for surely the Lord is our keeper.

I am reminded of an old gospel standard, God Has Smiled On Me. What stays with me from this standard are the lyrics that state that God has smiled on me, he has been good to me. He is the source of my joy, he fills me with his love.

The Shadow of his presence, the shadow of his love is where I long to be.  My desire is for each and every day of my life to be under the shadow of God.  To know that no matter what may happen, he is with me always.  Be gracious to me, O God, be gracious to me, for my soul takes refuge in you.  And in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge.

About dupree73

I was raised and grew up in the United Methodist Church. While I do proudly embrace my background and personal history within the United Methodist Church, I do feel that ultimately what is important is not the denomination that you are a part of. What matters most is the relationship that you have with the Lord. Part and parcel to any relationship is the level of commitment that one makes to it. With any and all relationships they are going to take time to grow. Through the years if I were to describe my relationship with the Lord using one word it would be “transformation.” Continuing to grow daily in my walk with the Lord, and as well continue to display the fruits of his spirit daily is for me what my life is all about. Frankly for these times, my attitude and belief is that the world is looking at those who are Christians to see if in fact their talk does indeed match their walk. As for me, my goal is to on a daily basis to be that individual who by virtue of their talk and their walk is by nature “peculiar.” If then by chance this way of living does indeed glorify the Lord, then my life indeed is destined to make a difference.
