As a child I can remember watching movies and TV growing up. The images that I can recall as a child continue to run through my mind from time to time.
As I got older I distinctly remember as well a phase of three dimensional movies. For awhile it seemed that three dimensional movies were all the rage. I recall as well when a three dimensional program came on having to wear those 3D glasses. This gave the program a real feel as it seemed that everything jumped out at you it some respects.
Now I admit to not totally understanding exactly what three dimensional is. In looking up the definition of what three dimensional is I found it to be rather layered. By the time I read a detailed explanation I found myself more confused than before. Thus I made up my mind to search out a basic definition of what three dimensional is. To this end I found out that the essence of three dimensional comes down to three things; length (or depth), width (or breadth), and height.
Three dimensional continues to be a presence in our lives. We see three dimensional in things such as video games, animated movies, computers, and in a host of other areas as well. Seemingly more and more each day the aspect of three dimensional continues to impact our lives.
But in thinking about the definition that I found for three dimensional I began to think about the three aspects of it. My thoughts began to turn to the length (or depth), width (or breadth), and height of God’s love and presence in our lives.
The length of God’s love is truly beyond our comprehension. I am reminded of the time when I was on a cruise. As I stood on the deck of the ship I gazed out over the ocean. What struck me at the time is that in looking as far as I could over the length of the ocean I still was not able to completely envision it in its entirety. So very often I find myself thinking that the length of God’s love is isn’t just beyond what can see or experience but is as well beyond comparison. It is humbling to give thought to the fact that God loves us so much that he went to the length of sending his Son to die on a cross for all of us. What could be truly greater that this.
As I have given thought to the width of God’s love I am immediately drawn to the lyrics of a classic gospel hymn, “When I Survey The Wondrous Cross, on which the Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count.”
Over and over in my mind I see the image of Christ on the cross, with his arms stretching wide. But as I have grown in my Christian walk I have come to recognize that the essence of his arms stretching wide is to remind us of that fact that his sacrifice wasn’t just for a few but was for all of us. For the width of his love stretches from the very beginning of time throughout eternity.
When I think about height I immediately envision buildings such as the Empire State building, or perhaps even the Sears Tower in Chicago. The view from ground level always results in you looking upwards to what seems to be the very nth degree of any level of height. And while with our humans eyes we may look upwards to the very limits of our sight, it doesn’t even begin to encapsulate the infinite level of height of not just God’s love for us, but as well the infinite level of his grace and mercy he showers on each us on a daily basis. As undeserving as we are, he continues to keep blessing us over and over again. For surely the height of his loving kindness is more than the any human eye can capture and fully appreciate.
Three dimensional. May each of us as children of the king make it our daily quest to appreciate the length, width and height of our awesome God.
