“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
If you are like virtually every other person on this earth you are sleeping with a sense of unease, waking to the same and spend most of the day pushing a palpable sense of worry down into your gullet. I get this. I do. I have lived through lots of scary stuff myself.
When as a young mom, this country was attacked by another unseen enemy, radical terrorists bent on our destruction, I was rocked… I was not a believer at the time and my own Father was an employee at the Pentagon (whom I could not reach for 3 days) so yup, I know that dark fearful reeling clutching at the unknown. I faced it again a few years later with the anthrax poisonings (I worked in NJ where the first envelopes appeared), the sniper situation in DC (I was terrified of even taking my children to day care) and then faced many serious issues personally with job loss, family illness, death and concerns. And now, here we are facing another unseen enemy, fear of the darkness we do not know and cannot see through. We are very uncertain of what is controllable (or not).
As a girl I always insisted on looking under the bed and in the closet before I went to bed. I was not necessarily afraid of the dark, I was afraid of what I could not SEE that was in the dark. And it was that fear – and still is – that paralyzes the hearts and minds of little girls and whole nations.
None of this is a surprise to Him. He knows what the outcome is and more importantly, He is allowing this. I have spent a lot of time pondering the why’s and when’s of this COVID-19 thing. Personally, I have been praying for years for Him to send His spirit across this nation and across this world to right the wrongs, draw hearts close to Him and to show mankind what is important and center us all back in Him.
How do we know that these very incidences are not aligned to do just that? Just a short review of the events in the Old Testament (and New for that matter) reveals God’s heart for His creation. Time and again God allowed “bad things to happen to good people” – war, pestilence, disease, hunger, oppression, economic loss….need I go on?
Everytime we read of an awful event, we are called to watch how the people under pressure handled it. In their own strength or did they turn to God for wisdom and help?
When we MAN-handle something in our own strength we are telling God, “Hey I got this, butt out.” And the strain and burden and “I know best” attitude gets us nowhere but exausted.
We are not meant for the lives we have chosen. We are meant for something greater – and that is why we are created in His Image. His good, perfect and loving image. And yet, we as a human body have turned away from God’s intentions, we have made ourselves or other things god. We don’t love others well, love ourselves well and we would rather scream at each other about money, politics, social correctness, race, religion and gender identification et al. Divisiveness is aligned with darkness. Love is light. And God is Love…and that is who we are meant to reflect.
I remember the heart of the nation after 9/11 terrorist attacks – in the midst of it we came together as one human family and put idealogical differences aside. (at least for awhile). We learned a lesson that we do not need to fear the dark because we can see through it – by reflecting God’s light into it.
We can be an unstoppable family if we will allow ourselves to become just that. Let me remind us all -FAMILY is God’s idea. Science has proven through mapping the human genome that we really are ALL family. We come from 2 progenitors – one woman and one man in Mesopotamia. Wow – how ya doin cuz?
And God. Whether we want to admit it or not, He is fully aware of this and I truly believe like a parent who allows His child to make bad choices which results in corrections in our character, He is allowing and watching us all and praying right along with us that we will self correct too. This is not a time for fear – this is a time for light. For love. For tenderness and for unity.
I am sure there are those who will read this post and think it is all puffery and sugar and not real world – but it really is that simple. Darkness can only live in this world or in our hearts if we invite it in and allow it to spread. Jesus said, ” I am the light of the world…”
Let us choose to love, choose light and turn away from darkness. COVID -19 will pass away eventually. What lesson will we the human family have learned from it? The choice is now and the choice will be our futures. What will you choose?
Matthew 4:16 “the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
