“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all[c]; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.”
An old friend called me the other day. We had not talked in ages and it was so wonderful to hear her voice. But it was a stressed out voice I heard.
“What in the world is going on? She asked. All this unrest. The pandemic. Depression. Polarizing politics. So much. Anger.. Now riots in the street. This world is so sick and seems on a path to the end….”
Honestly, these thoughts certainly have occurred to many.
Have you ever said something so profound and seemingly clear that you doubt it came from your own discernment? Well that is what happened in the next moment with my friend.
I said, “I think this is a correction.”
As believers who have spent any time studying the Bible, especially the Old Testament, God has a pattern of breaking apart that which is not of Him to build something new. Think Sodom and Gomorrah. Think the Hebrews in captivity in Egypt. Or how about the destruction of the temple?
He is consistently God who uses evil for good.
The ultimate example is the birth, life but murder of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus came to this earth during a time of Roman occupation of the Holy Land. The people (Jews especially) had no rights. No freedoms. Were controlled by the government (Herod(s)) and even their own high council. (The Pharisees) There was poverty. Prejudice. Unrest. Riots in the street. Oppression. And personal pain for many. There were no inalienable ”rights” for humankind. There was plenty of misery to go around.
But God. He sent Prophets to warn people of a better way. And they killed them. He sent His own Son, Jesus as the ultimate example and Savior for mankind and they killed him too.
There is just nothing new under the sun because man’s heart is bent to evil. Truth bomb. And unless we stop seeking our selfish will and turn to God’s, we will continue to repeat world history of man’s destruction against man.
So back to my comment. We are in a correction. I, like millions of believers have been praying for years to bring this nation and this world to repentance. To draw our collective hearts to God and turn us around and away from the spiritual, physical, mental and moral damage we chase.
And God. Well – be careful what you pray for because you might just get it. Let’s face it. We hard-hearted humans don’t change in good times. We only do that when we are broken. God knows that we are a profligate stiff necked bunch. And humanity has collectively been telling our Creator to get out of our lives, and more importantly our hearts for centuries.
God cannot be mocked. And likely – He is reminding us of that truth. Have you noticed the amount and frequency of tribulation we have had even as recently as the beginning of this century? The new century dawned with global terrorism and the “most powerful” (and perhaps most arrogant)? Nation on the globe being brought to her knees. The September 11.2001 terrorist attack on the USA was just the beginning of our woes.
We are being corrected. And we as a nation of course and especially as world humanity better realize “that it is a foolish woman who tears down her house with her own hands…” Prov. 14:1. At the end of the day, that house – all Nations – will no longer exist.
Scripture tells us that when Jesus first returns for His bride it will “like in the days of Noah” which is an indication that life will be “normal” and His children will be taken in a “twinkling of an eye.” What we are experiencing is far far from normal. If Jesus were to return today, I wonder how many of the nearly 8 billion hearts on this planet He would find to call? I think it would indeed be SLIM PICK’INS…
So just thinking here but….could this raging of the nations be to get our attention? In 2 Chronicles 7:14, God tells Solomon, “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
Shouldn’t believers be aware rather than weary? We must Turn and Learn. We Must do better as humanity. Not because of our will… but because of God’s plan. He loves us…all. And though He will honor our choices which tend to lead to destruction, He wants all of us to choose Him and a better way, Jesus.
And so humanity is being corrected. Because some day, maybe soon, our time will be up. Yet in the time we have left, whatever that looks like, let us be quick to listen (to the hurt we cause others), slow to speak (unless filled with God’s words of truth) and slow slow slow to get angry.
Let us pray for us and the world to respond and learn it’s lesson. For renewal. For revival. The hearts of a human cannot be changed through government legislation and rules. Real change only happens when hearts make room for Jesus and allow His spirit to indwell and renew.
So we who know this must be “wise women” who through prayer and petition build up her house, her community, her neighborhood, her world by pointing to Him- the only source of Peace and the only antidote for this ill and angry world.
“For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
Let us pray that whenever Jesus does return to us that it is not “slim pickings” He finds, but literally billions of human hearts waiting for him.
In the meantime – we all have a job to do. Ready. Set. Pray. Mightily. Like your life depends upon it. Because it does.
