“Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.” Mark:7:14
We’re in the mess we’re in culturally and socially today because nobody listens anymore. Oh, we hear each other ramble on and shout at one another. We hear protesters spew anger and frustration. We hear all the politicians ramble ramble ramble on communicating absolutely nothing significant. They’re all hearing but nobody’s listening.
Hearing is unilateral–it only goes one way. I listen to the radio.
Listening on the other hand goes both ways it is transactional. It requires a response. It requires one person to say something and another person or persons to respond–then “listening” has taken place.
But no one, no group, no faction, no protesters, no race, no religious group, no politician, no legislators–NO ONE is genuinely listening.
No committee, no symposium, no focus group, no town hall, no bi-racial commission will ever bridge the divide or solve the problems we face today. If we’re going to solve anything or make any progress at all it’s going to be one person at a time reaching out to someone different and truly listening to them. One on one. One person at a time.
