“An “unequally yoked” team has one stronger ox and one weaker, or one taller and one shorter. The weaker or shorter ox would walk more slowly than the taller, stronger one, causing the load to go around in circles. When oxen are unequally yoked, they cannot perform the task set before them. Instead of working together, they are at odds with one another. “(Got Questions.org)
2 Corinthians 6:14 NIV
Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14
This refers to a non-negotiable standard of choosing deep relationships and commitment to only those who are brethren in faith as life or business partners. The people we are permitted to be with, as lifelong partners are believers (unless that relationship was made beforewe became Christians.) So many people have had endless trouble because a believer has been yoked with an unbeliever who has different core values e.g. believing in jesus, the Word, the church, tithing, attending church, living by the Word of God like not cheating, false reporting, telling the truth, children’s upbringing, alcohol. It does not mean that we should not associate with unbelievers to whom we have the responsibility to be lights reflecting God’s love. It means we should examine our deep relationships where there have been compromises away from the principles of living and believing in the Word of God.
Is there any relationship I should review, the Holy Spirit leading me?
John 2:15 says: ‘Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life is not from the Father, but the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.’
God wants us to love him and the things of his kingdom and do his will at all times. Therefore, loving God is a non-negotiable standard for us as believers.
