What a Coincidence!?

“….A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel…” Numbers 24:17 NIV

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.” Micah 5:2 NIV

On December 21st the “Christmas Star” appeared in the southwest sky one hour after sunset. NASA reported the upcoming event on its website https://www.nasa.gov/feature/the-great-conjunction-of-jupiter-and-saturn

According to the wisdom of NASA scientists, “From our vantage point on Earth the huge gas giants will appear very close together, but they will remain hundreds of millions of miles apart in space. And while the conjunction is happening on the same day as the winter solstice, the timing is merely a coincidence, based on the orbits of the planets and the tilt of the Earth.”

I suppose coincidence surely could explain that. The Cambridge Dictionary defines coincidence as: an occasion when two or more similar things happen at the same time, especially in a way that is unlikely and surprising.

I guess 2000+ years ago it was a just happy “coincidence” that portended the birth of Jesus Christ as well. And that coincidence also occurred in the prophecies of Numbers, Micah, Daniel, Isaiah and others hundreds of years before Jesus was born.

Much has been written before and likely after of the “the many signs and wonders” of the appearance of this ‘Christmas Star’ two nights ago.

I know I was very much looking forward to seeing it.

I have to say that like you, like us all, I have been dealing with a lot of under currents of stress, anxiety and a total lack of control of my life. It has eaten away at my psyche and given me moments of sheer emotional exhaustion. 2020 has been a bust.

And God.

I do not believe that the appearance of the “ Christmas Star” was a mere heavenly coincidence this time. We humans needed it. We needed so desperately to be reminded that Emmanuel, “God is with us” is still true. That this star, like the one at the first Christmas which appeared to the sheperds, the wise men and the have’s and have nots equally – spoke to the Hope for mankind and that all really is not lost.

We tiny little human beings roam mindlessly and blindly on this big planet called earth and we seem to think that we are masters of our universe and our destinations. And if there is anything that we have learned in 2020, that is not the truth! Though the insitutions, media, governments, politicians and any others bleating loudly seem to think that they’ve got their proverbial fingers on the controls, they don’t. God is in control. End of statement. And by the appearance of this beautiful alignment of planets, at such a time as this- when the nations are roiling, we are reminded to look up.

Look up to the Light of life. Look up to Hand and Heart that controls all destiny. Look up to the heavens to seek the face of God. Look up to the possibilities for all our futures in the cradle of God’s love. Look up and remember that the same hand that aligns planets into one glorious star two nights ago or 2000 years past is the same One who created you and me- for a purpose and a time and yes, even a pruning.

The night of the “Star” I anxiously awaited outside to see it come together. The moon was rising high and in the next few minutes, cloud cover moved in between the setting sun and the rising moon. I could barely make out the moon and I could just see the glow of the sun on the western horizon. I was so sad. It too was a bust.

I so needed and wanted to see this sign in the heavens, for hope, to awe. For my personal reminder of God’s sovereignty. As a second touch.

Oh Father. Help me believe.

I sighed, I was so disappointed. There was no way I was going to be able to see it. I said a little prayer asking God to clear the skies, please God I asked. Please.

And then gave up and went inside to cook dinner.

It was in the middle of sautéing vegees when my husband came into the kitchen and said go outside and look up! I ran out and saw that the skies had cleared, and the star was strong and rising just above the line of the deeply shadowed sunset. I actually wept. Yup – that’s it below. Taken with an Iphone.

When God Jesus chose to wrap himself in flesh and come to earth 2000 years ago, he did so in a time not unlike today’s environment. First century was a bust! The nations, indeed the whole world was roiling then too. That is nothing new under the sun (moon or stars) 😉 – ever.

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem . Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. “And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him…” Matthew 2:1-2,11-15

Loved one. Take the mask off your tired hearts and stretched faith and heed the lesson of the star. Take the time to notice. Now and tomorrow. God is with us. The Christmas Star was not so much as a coincidence as it was a reminder. TO LOOK up. See Him. And call on Him only.

As was 2000 years ago and even more important now, wise men (and women) still seek Him. Amen and Amen

About setyourpathsstraight

It is my desire to serve God and others through writing; by proclaiming His goodness, provision and character in story form. Though I was not always a follower of Jesus Christ, I have experienced life changes that can only be a result of personally meeting Him. He is not a God of religion, but of relationship. I don't have the answers to life's challenges, but I know where to find them...only in God's Word can any of us stop following crooked paths. The month of my spiritual birthday, I read Proverbs 3:5-6 and claimed it as my life verse... "Trust in the Lord in all you do, lean not on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge Him.... and He will Set Your Paths Straight." Thank you for your visit today. Please come back again.
